Pam was riding her bicycle with her husband Randy (both seasoned cyclists and both wearing helmets) when she lost control and hit her head causing multiple skull fractures causing severe brain trauma. Pam was life-flighted to Iowa City for emergency surgery and later passed away on June 20th from the injuries. No automobiles were involved. Her husband Randy reminds us all to "Live to serve and enjoy life"

The Waverly Police Department confirms a woman was flown to Iowa City after a bicycle accident involving two bicyclists around 8:20 p.m. on the Waverly Rail, not far from 39th Street.The woman who was injured struck the back tire of another bicyclist. Police say she was wearing a helmet, but she suffered severe injuries and was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. AirCare was used.

53-year-old Dale French was riding a bicycle southbound on Highway 48 when a 2013 Ford Taurus being driven by 35-year-old Elysia White turned into the path of French near 2508 Broadway. The bicycle crashed into the Taurus and French hit his face on one of the vehicle's tires. French was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by Red Oak Rescue. He then was flown to the University of Nebraska Medical Center by LifeNet. White was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn and for driving without insurance.

Emergency responders were called car/bicycle crash shorly after 6pm where 28-year-old Christopher Scott Lewis, of Marion, was riding his bicycle, and was struck by 29-year-old Eric M. Wicks, also of Marion. Teh driver was heading west on Collins Road when he collided with Lewis, who was riding north across Collins Road at the intersection. The bicycle had a red light and no crossing light while the driver had a green light. The drivers was charged with failure to provide proof of financial liability, meaning no insurance, but no other traffic charges. Chris died a few days later.

An 18-year-old cyclist was seriously injured Thursday morning he was heading east on the sidewalk along Euclid Avenue. At the same time a Waste Management garbage truck was about to make a turn southbound onto MLK. The cyclist left the sidewalk and crashed into the back side of the truck. He fell beneath the truck and it appeared that the rear wheels rolled over him. He was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center. The driver likely won't be charged since he had the right of way. The cyclist wasn't crossing at a crosswalk.

Police say a driver called around 3:45 am. and said the bicyclist they hit was on the ground moaning. The driver, 59-year-old William Wolfe was driving southbound on 6th Street when he noticed a bicyclist in front of him and he didn't have time to hit the brakes before he hit the bicyclist. Rob was commuting home from work and biking westbound on Urbandale Avenue in the bike lane. The car was northbound on 56th Street and pulled out from a stop sign in front of Rob. Rob was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle and beaking his collarbone and transported to the hospital. It was dark, but the roadway was lit and Rob had his lights on. The driver drove away and has not been found. The case is still open.

A boy was riding his bicycle down a hill on 21st Street eastbound and entered the road in front of a pickup traveling northbound on Grandview Boulevard at 8 p.m. The boy and the bike were thrown several feet in the air after the collision. Police said the boy was in serious condition and rushed to a local hospital. His name was not released. The accident remains under investigation.

Hashim, 13, of Johnston was riding his bike with two other children near Northwest 66th Avenue and Merle Hay Road in Johnston when he was struck by a vehicle heading southbound on Merle Hay before 6 p.m. He was transported to a hospital in Des Moines and later died. Hashim was a middle-school student. Matthew Scott Nielsen, 36, of Granger was the driver of the truck, according to the police. He stayed on the scene. Preliminary investigations have determined neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident.

Deputies say Kaitlyn was riding on a grassy, hilly area when she lost control and fell. Kaitlyn was showing her family a trick and lost control of the bike, rolling over the handle bars, getting jabbed in the abdomen. The force itself caused severe injuries including a lacerated liver. He suffered broken bones in his back and both arms, as well as a concussion. Jared was halfway through a 3,000-mile bicycle ride across the U.S. to raise money for a charity when a collision Thursday injured him badly and ended his trek. The driver, Michael Vondrak, 29, of Hinton, was distracted by a passenger in his truck when the accident happened. No word on any charges. ***UPDATE Nov 3 2016 *** A Plymouth County judge found an Iowa driver guilty after he hit and paralyzed a cyclist who was on a cross-country trip for charity. Judge Robert Dull found Michael Vondrak, 29, of Merrill guilty on one count of operating too close to a cyclist and driving without insurance Thursday. Danny Cardin, 55, of Homer, Louisiana, was charged with serious injury by vehicle and leaving the scene of a serious injury crash *** UPDATE April 24th 2018 *** Foley spent nearly two months in the Omaha hospital before returning to Florida to rehabilitate. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Callie Kuhasz, of Boulder. She left the scene but was located taken into custody. Alcohol and speed are being considered as factors. Police at still investigating. Bill was a 1999 grad from either Gladbrook or Reinbeck and went to Simpson College - class of 2003.

28-year-old Ryan McKillip of West Liberty was traveling south on Davis Ave approx. 9:40 am in a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville when he hit Kuhn who also was southbound on Davis Avenue. Kuhn was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead from the injuries. Mar 31 2017 - Ryan Scott McKillip was charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving. According to the criminal complaint, McKillip was driving 10 mph over the 55 mph speed limit on the morning of June 25 when he encountered Kuhn on a rural two-lane county highway near West Liberty. Investigators determined McKillip steered unreasonably close to Kuhn, making an unsafe pass as the two entered a no-passing zone, according to the report.

He was riding the Clive Greenbelt Trail when he veered off the trail west of 100th Street and dropped 8ft on to the rocks and into the creek.He was found face down in the creek. Philips was training for his first RAGBRAI that he was going ot do with his daughter. Philips was flown to Floyd County Memorial Hospital but died of his injuries. Charles Wesley Brown was riding his bicycle in the 2800 block of SE 14th Street in Des Moines. A witness said she saw two men get out of their car and attack Brown for what seemed like no reason. Brown was hospitalized and was in critical condition almost a week later then passed awat from his assault injuries. Des Moines detectives arrested 28-year-old Michael Joseph Scott, of Des Moines, in connection with Brown’s murder. Scott has been charged with second-degree murder. Charles was riding his bike northbound along the 280 block of SE 14th Street when two men jumped him, punched him in the face and knocked him off his bicycle. Witnesses describe the suspects as white males in their 20s. The men left the scene in a silver 1996-2003 era Pontiac Grand Prix four-door sedan. Joleen Marie Stork, 60, of Glidden was mountain biking on county road E-26, east of Sycamore Avenue in Carroll County, when a Chevy pick-up drove up behind her and, not seeing her, struck the bicycle. Stork was thrown into the north ditch and pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner. Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol said the bike and vehicle were both travelling west toward a setting sun. "This looks like an accident," Ludwig said. Gregary Wade Franck, 41, was critically injured at 10:00 am on Sunday morning as he rode down Grand Ave near 51st Street when he was hit behind by Jonathan Leyva Rodriguez who had a lengthy criminal record, including child endangerment, OWI, assault and a driving-while-barred arrest. Jonathan who was nearly 3 times the legal limit, left the scene of the accident after hitting 3 more cyclists along Grand Ave. befere driving to his girlfriend's house in West Des Moines. Several other bicyclists witnessed the crash and were able to provide a description, including a license plate number. Jonathan was detained after a short time. Following interviews and further investigation, 31 year old Jonathan Leyva was arrested for OWI 2nd offense. Wade died 3 days later in the hospital. After Franck's death, his charges were upgraded to: Homicide by Vehicle, Homicide by Reckless Driving and Failure to Render Aid Resulting in Death. Wade and others were participating in the Urban Assault bike ride.

At approximately 5 pm on 03/22/15, Brent Caswell, 28, turned in front of Heather Wince as she, her husband and 5-yr-old stepson were riding eastbound in the bike lane of Ingersoll Avenue. Wince was unable to stop in time and smashed into the side of Caswell’s car. Caswell then fled the scene, striking two pedestrians who had stopped to assist Wince. Wince suffered a fractured clavicle and multiple soft tissue injuries. Caswell was arrested later that evening and charged with failure to maintain control, financial liability and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He was fined $195.00 for failure to maintain control. He is scheduled to stand trial on July 8, 2015 for fleeing the scene. The financial liability case is being held open at this time.

At approximately 7:00pm Scott was commuting East on Kingman. He stopped at 31st and waited for the light to change. A Pickup truck driver was traveling West on Kingman, and signaling a left turn onto 31st. He waited over 30+ seconds for the light to change, so there was ample time for the motorist to see Scott. The light turned green, and the pickup pulls out into the intersection and acted like they were going to stop, but did not. The motorist clipped Scott's rear wheel. Scott had two headlights (1 steady, 1 flashing) and was wearing a bright yellow reflective safety vest. The driver was completely inattentive and told police that she did not see the bicycle. There were witnesses, but DSM police did not file an accident report because there was 'no injuries'. The driver was only cited fort expired insurance.
