Ankeny child hit by school bus near middle school campus
A central Iowa child has been hospitalized after being hit by a school bus Thursday afternoon.
Ankeny police Lt. Brian Kroska said officers were called to the corner of Northwest State Streetand Northwest Prairie Ridge Drive, northwest of Prairie Ridge Middle School, on reports of a juvenile struck by a bus at about 4 p.m.
The victim was riding a bike when he was hit by a Durham School Services bus, which helps get Ankeny Community School District students home from class. Kroska said he did not knowthe child's gender or age, but estimatedthat the victim is a middle-school-agedstudent.
The investigation is ongoing, but speed is "not believed to be a factor" right now,Kroska said.
"It might have been a case of the student being on a bike and driver not seeing them," he said.
At 6:15p.m. Thursday, Kroska said he didnot have an update on the child's condition, but he was expecting one later in the evening. The victim was injured but alert before being taken away in an ambulance, he said.
The driver of the bus could be cited, police say, but that decision won't be made until later in the investigation process.
