After the West Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit began its investigation, it was determined that alcohol and impaired driving were involved in the case.

An Urbandale man has been charged with homicide by motor vehicle after police said he struck a bicyclist with his car while under the influence on Friday night.

West Des Moines police responded to the crash on Raccoon River Drive after a report that a vehicle struck a bicyclist.

Once on scene, first responders began life-saving measures on the bicyclist, but he died later at a local Des Moines hospital.

The bicyclist has been identified as 57-year-old James Deal, of Des Moines. The driver was identified as 42-year-old Brian Kirkman, of Urbandale.

Police determined that alcohol and impaired driving were involved in the case.

Early Saturday morning, Kirkman was arrested for homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence and operating a motor vehicle under the influence, second offense.

The investigation is ongoing. Kirkman was booked into the Dallas County Jail.
