14-year-old Fitzgerald was riding his bicycle and being pulled by a 2012 Chevrolet Impala driven by 18-year-old Jeremy Christopher Gilette, of Fort Madison, when he fell from the bike and landed on the pavement. Fitzgerald was transported to Unity Point Hospital where he died from injuries. Gillette is charged with Homicide by Vehicle, A Class C Felony.

Iowa businessman and former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Fred Hubbell was hit by a car while riding his bike in Scottsdale, Arizona. According a family friend, a motorist ran a red light and struck Hubbell on Friday. Hubbell has undergone two different surgeries for a broken pelvis. The injuries are not life-threatening but will require significant physical therapy.

Unknown male cyclist was struck by a while crossing Martin Luther King Jr Parkway (MLK) on Inter-Urban Trail in Des Moines. The Cyclist was conscious and was setting on the ground. Reports indicated the car stopped and police and ambulance were on the scene. No details on which way the car or cyclist was headed or who was at fault.

An unidentified female critically injured in a traffic accident near Kanesville and Main in Council Bluffs around 10:30am on a Tuesday morning. Police say the bicyclist was northbound on the sidewalk at the intersection. North and southbound traffic had a green light. Kathryn Anderson, 19, of Council Bluffs, was southbound and turning east onto Kanesville Blvd. As she made her turn, she did not see the bicyclist crossing the road and they collided. Investigators said Anderson had the green light, but aren't sure if the bicyclist had a walk or don't walk signal. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital for treatment of critical head injuries. The investigation of the accident continues.

Gary Long, 70, was killed around 8:30am on a roadway west of Estherville in Dickinson County. A van, driven by 36-year-old Kory Doll of Estherville, hit Gary who was in the roadway next his bicycle. The report states another vehicle in front of Doll obstructed his view. He swerved in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was unable to avoid striking Long, who died at the scene.

Kevin Sean Zehnder, was traveling on a bicycle near the intersection of North Blossom and 3rd Streets at approximately 7 p.m. Zehnder entered the intersection and was struck by 33-year-old Adam Babcock of Sac City, who was operating the pickup truck. Zehnder was transported to Loring Hospital and was later airlifted to a Des Moines hospital with life-threatening injuries. Lake View Chief of Police said an investigation into the accident is ongoing.

21-year-old Kayla Elliott was driving a suburban when she struck 21-year-old Rudy Moses’ bicycle around 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of West 6th and Locust streets. Moses was airlifted to the hospital but later died. The cause of the crash was still under investigation.

A 9-year-old boy attempted to cross Avenue G in Council Bluffs on his bike by cutting between two parked cars, so the driver of a vehicle traveling on the road was unable to see him and struck him. The boy was not wearing a helmet, but he suffered only minor injuries. He was transported to Nebraska Medicine for a head laceration. After an investigation, no citations were issued.

59-year-old Melinda Lawrence was driving home in CEntral City when she saw a man, identified as 54-year-old Jeffrey Alan Scott riding his bicycel near N. Marion Road and Barber Street. Lawrence followed Scott into the back parking lot of the Dollar General Store hitting him and leaving the scene with Scott's bicycel trailer pinned under her car. She didn't call for help or try to render aid before leaving. The deputy reported smelling alcoholic beverage coming from Lawrence's car and then asked her about the damage her car had. Witnesses called 9-1-1 to report finding an unresponsive man behind the Dollar General Store. An investigation found Lawrence was operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level of 0.168 and willfully drove her car at Scott and hit him while he was on or beside his bike, with the intent to commit an assault with a dangerous or deadly weapon. The investigation also found Lawrence left the scene intentionally knowing Scott had been hit and injured. Lawrence has been arrested and charged with Murder 1st, Homicide by Vehicle, and Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Accident.

An 8 year old girl was hit and knocked off her bike by a pick-up just before 2 p.m. Sunday. The pick-up fled the scene. The crash caused a significant head trauma and she was taken to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake. No updates.

A 13-year-old Altoona boy was in serious condition after being struck by a car while riding his bike across 36th Avenue SW at 8th Street SW near Walmart at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, said Altoona police Sgt. Brett Handy. Handy said a driver southbound on 36th Avenue stopped and signaled for the teen to cross at a sidewalk about 50 feet away from the intersection. As the cyclist crossed, he did not see the other vehicle heading north on 36th Avenue. The teenager was transported by ambulance to the local hospital, where Handy said he underwent surgery. Handy said last time he checked, the victim's condition remained serious. No one has been charged in the incident. (Hit & Run?)

31-year-old Eugene Harding received multiple head injuries in the crash after he was struck by a car Wednesday evening around 6:20pm. The driver, Nicole Andreesen, 32, of Waverly, told police she was headed east on Broadway Street and had reached down to get a cigarette. When she looked back up, the bicyclist was in the middle of the roadway and was unable to stop in time, she told police. Eugene died 3 days later from head injuries. The driver was charged with steering too close to a bicyclist. The charge is a simple misdemeanor and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $250 fine.

David Strittmater, 60, was injured after he struck a car driven by Lisa Campbell, 36, of Mason City, while riding his bike Tuesday afternoon shortly before 5pm. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center with a "non-life threatening head injury. Strittmater was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device after he hit the side of Campbell’s vehicle. Campbell was cited with failure to provide proof of financial responsibility.

David J. Freeland, 52, of Davenport, was riding a bicycle north on Brady Street in Davenport when he was struck from behind by 34 year old Marcus Shaw whose vehicle had with no plates. Shaw was identified as the driver. Shaw fled the scene and was recovered in the 1000 block of Charlotte Street after contionuing to drive at high speeds and running stop signs in a residential area. A witness in one of the vehicles said they were “joy riding” on Brady Street and swerved across all four lanes of traffic while driving north. Speed surveys done from videos confirmed their speeds were are high as 72 mph blocks from the crash site. Shaw had already served 7 years in prison for shooting a 17 year old in 2012. Shaw, 34, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle-drag racing, a Class D felony, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.

Witnesses told police that a full-size, sport utility vehicle struck 56-year-old Darrel Ford on his bicycle at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Woodland Avenue at 1am. Connie was hit at about 6:05 a.m. Monday morning on Highway 218 just north of Washburn as both the bike rider and the vehicle were headed southbound. she was pronounced dead at the Covenant Medical Center shortly after the crash. The vehicle was driven by Joshua Summerhays, 39, of Waterloo. Police investigatged for 3 months and showed Summerhays was “distracted by an electronic device at the time of the accident.” Summerhays was also under the influence of methamphetamine, opiates, and benzodiazepines at the time of the crash. He was charged with vehicular homicide in Oct 2018 and was sentanced to 50 years in prison on March 12th 2019. His sentance was 25 years each for charges of homicide by vehicle and conspiracy to deliver meth following a plea. Both sentences were stacked consecutively for a total of 50 years behind bars. He was also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to Inks’ estate, and fined $5,000 plus costs and surcharges for the meth charge. He must serve about eight years in prison on the drug charge before he will be eligible for parole. Connie was a Sumner native and a longtime cyclist, rower and tri-athlete and had earned about 90 medals in the sports as of 2005, winning the Iowa Games and other competitions. She was also one of the top female rowers in the country in the 2000s.

Ruth Morris was walking with her son along the Mississippi River Trail when 2 cyclists came around the corner. The women cyclist lost control and then a male cyclist ran into the women cyclist, flipped over and hit Ruth head-on. She was hit so hard her shoes and earrings flew off. Ruth suffered multiple skull fractures, among other injuries and died an hour later.

She pleaded guilty March 11th 2019 to two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for driving into the two — who were on a single bike and then driving away. Christopher Scott Lewis, 28, was hit at the intersection of Collins Road and Twixt Towne Road NE in Marion around 6pm. Lewis was wearing a helmet. Lewis was struck by a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Eric M. Wicks, also of Marion. Wicks was heading west on Collins Road when he collided with Lewis, who was riding north across Collins Road at the intersection. The cyclist had a red light and no crossing light while the driver had a green light, according to the release. Wicks was charged with failure to provide proof of financial liability, meaning no insurance, but no other traffic charges.

53-year-old Dale French was riding a bicycle southbound on Highway 48 when a 2013 Ford Taurus being driven by 35-year-old Elysia White turned into the path of French near 2508 Broadway. The bicycle crashed into the Taurus and French hit his face on one of the vehicle's tires. French was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by Red Oak Rescue. He then was flown to the University of Nebraska Medical Center by LifeNet. White was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn and for driving without insurance.

McLaughlin was arrested for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and open container. Rodriguez was transported to Mercy Medical Center--North Iowa by Garner Ambulance. The extent of her injuries is unclear.

An 18-year-old cyclist was seriously injured Thursday morning he was heading east on the sidewalk along Euclid Avenue. At the same time a Waste Management garbage truck was about to make a turn southbound onto MLK. The cyclist left the sidewalk and crashed into the back side of the truck. He fell beneath the truck and it appeared that the rear wheels rolled over him. He was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center. The driver likely won't be charged since he had the right of way. Police say a driver called around 3:45 am. and said the bicyclist they hit was on the ground moaning. The driver, 59-year-old William Wolfe was driving southbound on 6th Street when he noticed a bicyclist in front of him and he didn't have time to hit the brakes before he hit the bicyclist. 7-year-old Boston Asby was hit by an SUV while riding his bicycle across the street in Kalona on a Wednesday morning. Boston says he pushed the button on the crosswalk and rode acrtoss the street into the path of an oncoming SUV. Boston was air lifted to the hospital but 15 stitches and a handful of hours later he was able to go home. No chanrges filed. The father stated "We are thankful for the driver, she was there to hold him until the EMT's arrived".

Rob was commuting home from work and biking westbound on Urbandale Avenue in the bike lane. The car was northbound on 56th Street and pulled out from a stop sign in front of Rob. Rob was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle and beaking his collarbone and transported to the hospital. It was dark, but the roadway was lit and Rob had his lights on. The driver drove away and has not been found. The case is still open.

A boy was riding his bicycle down a hill on 21st Street eastbound and entered the road in front of a pickup traveling northbound on Grandview Boulevard at 8 p.m. The boy and the bike were thrown several feet in the air after the collision. Hashim, 13, of Johnston was riding his bike with two other children near Northwest 66th Avenue and Merle Hay Road in Johnston when he was struck by a vehicle heading southbound on Merle Hay before 6 p.m. He was transported to a hospital in Des Moines and later died. Hashim was a middle-school student. Matthew Scott Nielsen, 36, of Granger was the driver of the truck, according to the police. He stayed on the scene. Preliminary investigations have determined neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident.

Kaitlyn was showing her family a trick and lost control of the bike, rolling over the handle bars, getting jabbed in the abdomen. The force itself caused severe injuries including a lacerated liver. Emergency crews found Toby unresponsive on the ground after falling from his bike. Witnesses report that he had been riding south on State Street and lost control of his bicycle and fell off. He suffered broken bones in his back and both arms, as well as a concussion. Jared was halfway through a 3,000-mile bicycle ride across the U.S. to raise money for a charity when a collision Thursday injured him badly and ended his trek. 28-year-old Ryan McKillip of West Liberty was traveling south on Davis Ave approx. 9:40 am in a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville when he hit Kuhn who also was southbound on Davis Avenue. Kuhn was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead from the injuries. Mar 31 2017 - Ryan Scott McKillip was charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving. According to the criminal complaint, McKillip was driving 10 mph over the 55 mph speed limit on the morning of June 25 when he encountered Kuhn on a rural two-lane county highway near West Liberty. Investigators determined McKillip steered unreasonably close to Kuhn, making an unsafe pass as the two entered a no-passing zone, according to the report.

Charles Wesley Brown was riding his bicycle in the 2800 block of SE 14th Street in Des Moines. A witness said she saw two men get out of their car and attack Brown for what seemed like no reason. Brown was hospitalized and was in critical condition almost a week later then passed awat from his assault injuries. Des Moines detectives arrested 28-year-old Michael Joseph Scott, of Des Moines, in connection with Brown’s murder. Scott has been charged with second-degree murder. A citizen’s tip led police to Scott.

Charles was riding his bike northbound along the 280 block of SE 14th Street when two men jumped him, punched him in the face and knocked him off his bicycle. Witnesses describe the suspects as white males in their 20s. The men left the scene in a silver 1996-2003 era Pontiac Grand Prix four-door sedan. Joleen Marie Stork, 60, of Glidden was mountain biking on county road E-26, east of Sycamore Avenue in Carroll County, when a Chevy pick-up drove up behind her and, not seeing her, struck the bicycle. Stork was thrown into the north ditch and pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner. Sgt. Nathan Ludwig with the Iowa State Patrol said the bike and vehicle were both travelling west toward a setting sun. "This looks like an accident," Ludwig said. The accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. It is still under investigation.
