A 78-year-old Sheldon man was injured when he was struck by an SUV while bicycling shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4.

Peter Eugene Hamill was bicycling east on the 4800 mile of 16th Street/330th Street south of Sheldon when he was struck by an eastbound 2018 Ford Explorer driven by 30-year-old Alexandra Ann Fischer of Archer, according to the Sheldon Police Department.

Hamill was thrown from the bicycle onto the shoulder of the road.

He was transported by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center with “suspected serious/incapacitating” injuries.

Fischer said she never saw the bicyclist, according to the accident report.

Hamill was wearing a helmet, and his bicycle had flashing lights activated on the front and rear.

Fischer was cited for operating vehicle too close to a bicyclist.

Her vehicle received an estimated $4,000 damage.
