Distance - Up to you. It's a Destination Ride!

BIKEIOWA has organized several Handlebar Happy Hours (HHH) to celebrate Bike Month 2023. Ride with old friends and meet new ones. See YOU there!

Cumming Tap, Outskirtz & The Chicken are our hosts for this Handlebar Happy Hour. They are all along the Great Western Trail. (click links for all addresses)

Cumming Tap - The Cumming Tap is just like your "neighborhood bar", only it is 8 miles South of Des Moines along the Great Western Trail. You'll see the normal beer signs, peanuts, pool table, Jukebox, TVs and a few video games. Out back is a great patio with a view of the Great Western Trail and a place to park your bikes. Feeling like home yet?

OutSkirtz Bar - "Live Hard, Laugh Often, Drink A Lot!" - Outskirtz is the area's leading bar serving Norwalk, West Des Moines, Cumming, and surrounding areas since 2014. They are right on the Great Western Trail near Orilla. They have a Full Service Bar with Limited Menu. Check out their cocktails, beer, wine, bar snacks, pizza, outdoor patio, pool, darts, live bands, karaoke, and more.

the Chicken - The Chicken is a classic roadhouse joint and cycling destination on the Great Western Trail! Want Chicken? Pizza? Breakfast? Drinks? Patio? Bike Parking?

Located in the Des Moines metro just south of the Highway 5 Bypass in what was once Orilla, Iowa. Located right off the Great Western bike trail, it’s the perfect stop mid-ride. Their menu has something for everyone, serving southern chicken specialties like Broasted Chicken, the Hot Chicken Sundae and Nashville Hot Chicken, as well as more classic favorites including several burgers, salads and sandwiches. Don’t forget to check out their beer list, where you’ll find a great variety of both domestic and craft styles.

May is National Bike Month and is celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.

BIKEIOWA co-hosted the first organized "Bike to Work Day" on May 16th 2003. That grew to "Bike to Work Week" in 2005 and the Des Moines Bicycle Collective took over in 2011 to create "Bike Month" (with focus in the Des Moines metro) as we know it today. View past Bike to Work and "Bike Month" Features.

Bike Month is so much more than riding your bike to work.

  • It's about riding from here to there. Riding around the block, riding to get coffee, riding to work, date-night ride, riding on a trail or road, riding to get/stay in shape or running errands.
  • It's about inspiration - riding further and encouraging others to bike.
  • It's about riding your bike whether if be for fun, fitness or with family and/or friends.
  • It's about riding your bike places it’s never seen or take your bike places you’d usually see by car.
  • It's about your wellness, happiness and community well-being.
  • It's about safer streets and connected communities and a healthier planet
  • It's about exploration and finding new ways to get from here to there.

Invite friends and co-workers to ride with you. Help them get their bike, clothes and gear ready. Offer advice and assistance to increase their confidence. Educate them on bicycle etiquette for riding on trails, roads, with other cyclists, motorists and others on the trails. And have Fun!

Iowa is a GREAT place to ride ALL year long and BIKEIOWA has several dedicated pages in their "Resources" menu section for commuting and promoting bicycle-friendliness.

6:45pm - Cumming Tap
We'll be riding there on the Great Western Trail if you want to joIN in. We are pretty open on the "Leave DSM" time. Prob 4:30pm from Jethros area.
