It was an amazing year for Iowa cyclocross. When most states cyclocross participation is dwindling, Iowa had more races on the calendar than we have in the last ten years (maybe ever). It it great to see the sport flourish with new faces, seasoned vets, and fresh venues.

As the 2024 cyclocross season wraps up, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the twelve **Renegade Cyclocross Practices** that brought riders, racers, and cyclocross enthusiasts together at various parks across Des Moines. From late summer through fall, these grassroots gatherings became a staple for honing skills, building community, and stoking excitement for the racing season ahead.

But we couldn’t have done it without you—our loyal attendees. Whether you came to sharpen your cornering, test your fitness, or simply hang out and enjoy the vibe, your participation is what made these practices special. Now, we’re turning to you for feedback to make 2025 even better.

Highlights of the 2024 Renegade Practices

This year, we explored multiple venues to keep the courses fresh and challenging. From tight technical turns at the Water Works Back Loop to the flowing swoopy course at George Davis Softball Park to the lung-busting run-ups at Goode Park, each park offered a unique flavor of cyclocross. Riders faced obstacles like barriers, off-cambers, and even a bit of sand. We kept the structure flexible, allowing participants to choose how hard—or how fun—they wanted to make it.

The series wasn’t just about skills and fitness; it was about fostering the cyclocross community in Des Moines. We saw new riders giving the sport a try, kids tagging along for their first barriers, and seasoned racers helping each other dial in the perfect remount.

Tell Us What You Think

Now it’s your turn to weigh in. Here’s what we’d love to hear from you:
  • What was your favorite venue, and why?
  • Overall Likes and Dislikes
  • What aspects of the practices did you enjoy the most?
  • What could we improve for next year?** (Different venues, skill-focused drills, timing, race format, accessibility?)
  • Would you recommend these practices to others? Why or why not?
Your input will help us fine-tune the Renegade Cyclocross Practices to better serve riders of all levels.
