The director of the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa says the cross-state bike ride will no longer attempt to set a Guinness World Record when this year's 50th anniversary edition of the weeklong event pedals from Ames into Des Moines.
It's not that there's any doubt that the ride that day will smash the existing single-day participation record for RAGBRAI. Already touted as the world's largest annual bicycle tour, the ride drew an all-time high of 40,000 riders when it last passed within Des Moines' vicinity during a Winterset-to-Indianola leg on July 23, 2019.
