Des Moines, IA The YMCA of Greater Des Moines Health Living Center is raising funds to purchase a stationery bike, an FES bike, to help bicyclists and others who have been injured, with their therapy and recovery. The FES bike is a stationary bike for people who have had spinal cord injuries or other health problems with walking. It strengthens the leg muscles and allows the user to power the bike with his own leg muscles. There is also research that indicates some patients regain more function in the legs with use of the bike. A friend of the family was injured last year in a swimming accident. His family is working with the YMCA to head a fundraiser to help the YMCA purchase a bike for our friend, Ben, and others to use. Currently, there are no FES bikes available in central Iowa. The bike costs $18,000. You can send a tax deductible check made payable to the YMCA Clive Branch FES Bike Fund. The check can be sent to the YMCA at: YMCA of Greater Des Moines Healthy Living Center 12493 University Avenue Clive, IA 50325 (515) 226-YMCA (9622) This fundraising initiative was spearheaded by Ted and Ben Grauer of Van Meter, and this would be a great benefit to many in our community. Please share this with your friends, neighbors, family, and all bicycling enthusiasts who you think would be willing to help. This is a great community we live in - thanks for all you do to make it that way! Diane Faris
