The many hundreds of riders came not only to take on the 24-mile round-trip ride but also to show their support for the Perry community.

The 47th annual BRR Ride from Perry to Rippey came with an extra sense of unity on Saturday.

The many hundreds of riders came not only to take on the 24-mile round-trip ride but also to show their support for the Perry community.

Just before the riders took off, they held a moment of silence in remembrance of the town's Jan. 4 shooting.

Mark Paca, one of the riders, said he hopes the BRR can help bring people together through a love of cycling.

"God bless these people. I know it's been a terrible, terrible thing that's happened and we're praying for this community," he said. "I think this is how we can all maybe unite a little bit better."

Kevin Edwards from Des Moines has already ridden in a handful of BRR Rides in previous years.
