This May, we’re celebrating bikes as great for fitness, a fun way to recreate and an empowering and economic means to get to work and school. It’s Bike Month!
Bikeways
North Liberty has an extensive trail network, but this May we’re starting to implement on-street bike routes to help connect people to the places they want to go, like parks, schools and trails. These bikeways will help people on bikes find suitable streets for riding on, typically those with lower speeds and traffic volumes. In Iowa, bikes can use any public road with the exception of interstate highways (I mean, yikes), and have the right to the full lane.

Wednesday, May 17, 6 p.m., 1 Quail Creek Circle
To celebrate the bike-themed underpass at Ranshaw Way, the completion of work at Dubuque, Front and Cherry streets and our bikeway initiative, we’ll host a ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. at the new underpass, then ride to Penn Meadows Park, via trails and bikeways, for ice cream. Attendees who bike from Ranshaw Way to Penn Meadows Park will score a free single scoop of Heyn’s ice cream and asweet custom North Liberty Bontrager water bottle.

Thursday, May 18, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Community Center, 520 W. Cherry Street
In partnership with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, the Recreation Department will host a skills session. Sugar Bottom Bikes will be on-hand for simple tune-ups. Kona Ice will be on site, and the first 50 to attend get a free small shaved ice.
Bike to Work Week and Bike Month Events
Bikes are a great way to get to work (and can save you time and money parking your car), and May 15 through 21 brings daily, free bike commuter breakfasts and other events. You can find them on the event calendar maintained byBike Iowa City, which is organized by Think Iowa City and encourages you to ride your own adventure, offering maps and other resources.
More Bike Goodness
North Liberty has 22 miles of multiuse trail and sidepaths, and they connect to points throughout the county. They’re usable year-round (even through winter when our Parks Department clears them).
The North Liberty Community Center is a bike-friendly building, meaning our team is aware of the basic needs of cyclists, can provide local information, can get your water bottle refilled, offers a spots to lock your bike, and has basic bicycle repair needs.
The Recreation Department sells bike helmets for just $12 each.
Our Police Department offers bike registration, which can help us get your bike back to you if it’s lost or stolen.
