Des Moines is one step closer to getting a new section of pedestrian and bicycle trail that will connect the west side of the Des Moines River to the Neal Smith Trail at Birdland Park in an effort to provide outdoor recreational opportunities for underserved communities.

The Des Moines City Council approved $500,000 in grant funding for the project at its meeting Monday. The approval kicks off the first phase of the Central Place Levee Trail.

The 1.6-mile trail will include access at University and College avenues, according to a memo to the City Council. Eventually, the trail will extend even further north along the west bank of the river to Euclid Avenue.
