One of the busiest intersections in the Des Moines metro will be closed for several months as crews work to improve the area for safer traffic flow.

Starting Monday, Grand Avenue between the road known as both63rd Street and First Street and the Wendy's restaurant at about SecondStreet in West Des Moines will be closed to through traffic. The closure is expected to last through November, and businesses along that busy section of Grand will remain accessible.

The city is embarking on a $5 million project to widen Grand Avenue from the intersection to FourthStreet from its current four lanes to five, adding a dedicated turn lane and a median. At the 63rd/First Streetintersection there will be six lanes, includingtwo dedicated left turn-lanes for driversheading north from Grand Avenue.
