Authorities have released the name of a man who died after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle just north of Council Bluffs.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office identified the man Monday as 55-year-old William Shepard, who lived in Council Bluffs.

The sheriff's office says a vehicle has been seized as evidence from someone who contacted the sheriff's office with information after the crash. No arrest or charges have been reported.

Deputies found Shepard early Saturday morning with serious injuries, and he was pronounced dead later at a hospital. The vehicle that had struck him had left the area.

"An individual came forward who thought they hit something, possibly a deer," Sheriff Jeff DankerDanker said Sunday. "(Deputies) found damage to the vehicle consistent with the accident. We don't have too much information and we are continuing the investigation."

The name of the man who came forward is being withheld pending outcome of the investigation, Danker said. His vehicle was seized as evidence

The collision occurred at Old Lincoln Highway and Northline Drive just before 2:30 a.m. Deputies responding to the scene located Shepard, but the vehicle that hit him had left.

Danker said the man who came forward will be interviewed again to see if his story is consistent with what investigators learned at the scene.

The driver’s name will not be released unless charges are filed.

Officials in western Iowa say a man has died after the bicycle he was riding was hit by a vehicle, and investigators are now searching for the driver.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office says in a news release that deputies were called to a section of the Old Lincoln Highway around 2:25 a.m. Saturday for a report of a bicycle that had been hit.

Arriving deputies found a man with serious injuries, but the vehicle that hit him had fled. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet identified the man killed, and no arrests have been made.
