Potholes are a problem right now. Now, that's an understatement.

The weather has been as tough on the roads as it's been on us. But our record-breaking winter isn't the only reason our roads are in such bad shape. The larger cause has to do with priorities.

Spending on road maintenance is a big issue -- so much so, in fact, that the city of Des Moines and several other Polk County communities asked taxpayers to approve an additional 1-cent sales tax to help.

The problem, however, is that many times, money earmarked for infrastructure improvement is spent on splashier projects like bike trails, scenic overlooks and water parks to the detriment of roads and sewers.
