LEON, Iowa (KCRG-TV) —A second cyclist has died on the 2016 Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol said Clifton Kahler, 60, of Florida, suffered a heart attack around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday near Decatur.

Kahler had been pedaling about 2 miles west of Decatur on Highway 2 when the heart attack happened.

Ambulance workers and State Patrol performed CPR at the scene and used a defibrillator. Kahler was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Trooper Bob Conrad said bike riders need to be well prepared when embarking on RAGBRAI.

“We are very sorry that things like this happen,” Conrad said. “It seems like, too often, we have a cardiac arrest or we have a heart attack. What I would say to most people (is) RAGBRAI is not just a simple ride to the ice cream shop event. Literally, we ride 50 to 70 miles a day, and we ride it in heat sometimes that is unbearable.”

The other fatality came Sunday, on Day One of RAGBRAI, when Wayne Ezell, 72, of Florida, died when he was stuck by a pickup truck near Glenwood.
