The bicyclist seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash Sunday has died.
Des Moines police said 41-year-old Gregary Wade Franck suffered
serious head trauma after a driver hit Franck from behind. He died
Tuesday as a result of his injuries.
Police said 31-year-old
Jonathan Leyva Rodriguez was arrested and charged for the crash. Leyva's
initial charges included second offense operating while intoxicated,
two counts of serious injury by vehicle, driving while barred and three
counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
Following Franck's
death, Leyva is facing additional charges: homicide by OWI, homicide by
reckless driving and failure to render aid resulting in death.
Police
said Franck was participating in the Urban Assault Ride bike race when
he was hit in the 5100 block of Grand Avenue, near Country Club
Boulevard, around 10 a.m.
Witnesses were able to provide
police with a vehicle description and license plate number of the
vehicle that fled the scene, which led to Leyva's arrest.
Police
said Leyva also sideswiped two other cyclists. Gregory Strub, 41, had
pain to his elbow and an injury to his left calf. Julee Peterson, 40,
had pain in her back and road rash on her legs.
KCCI obtained court documentsthat reveal new details in Leyva's arrest Sunday.
The
report states that Leyva told police he drank five beers. His driver's
license has been barred since March of last year until March of 2017.Click here to read more about the hit-and-run arrest.
