A new push at the Statehouse is underway to improve bicycle safety. A bill would mean bikers without a light could face a fine.

Iowa law requires every bike to have rear and front reflectors so bicyclists are easier to see in the dark, but now some lawmakers are saying that isn't enough.

The move comes as Iowa bike riders like Dan Baldi dream of summer.

"Summer is five days, six days a week. In the winter time, I'm commuting between 40 and 60 percent of the week," said Baldi.

Biking is Baldi's main mode of transportation.

"All bikes that are manufactured come in with reflectors on the front and rear," said Baldi.

He's one of thousands of bike enthusiasts who would be required to have a rear-facing light on his bike when he's riding on the road between sunset and sunrise, or face a new $25 fine.

"There's really no studies that show that it's actually been safer to have a light versus a reflector," said Baldi.

A state lawmaker introduced the bill in an effort to improve bike safety and cut back on crashes. DOT records show three bicyclists were killed in 2013, three in 2012 and five in 2011.
