Des Moines, IA WHO Staff Writer August 31, 2009 A law officer in Polk County is back on the job, four months after being hit by a vehicle while riding her bike to work. Leesa Shoemaker, with the Polk County Sheriff's Office was struck on Highway 415 near Polk City. She was in intensive care and out of work for months but Monday is her first day back on the job full time. Shoemaker says her accident was different in one way from that of Mark Grgurich's, who was killed Sunday by a hit and run driver in Warren County. "The motorist that did strike me immediately stopped and was able to call 911. If he had not stopped I would be in the same position as Mark and not survive that accident. i am grateful that that happened," says Shoemaker. After nearly four months of surgery and physical therapy, Shoemaker is picking up her bike Monday afternoon and hopes to get back on the road sometime soon.
