Work on a 25-mile trail from Ankeny to Woodward will move forward now that a fundraising goal has been met, organizers announced Wednesday. Donations exceeded the $550,000 mark required by Wednesday to secure a $1.75 million Vision Iowa grant, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation said in a press release. Twenty-three miles of the $14.7 million project are complete, but the bridge spanning the Des Moines River valley is unfinished. Organizers must still raise about $400,000 by next summer to finish the bridge and trail, officials said Wednesday. Project leaders include the cities of Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid and Woodward; Polk, Story, Dallas and Boone counties; and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
