Newton, IA Cyclocross bicycle racing returns to Newton on Sunday at Maytag Park. Since 2001, Newton has been a hotbed of regional cyclocross through the efforts of Newton natives Rob Versteegh and Marc Hollander. The action-packed races around a one-mile course in Maytag Park has been a pleasant surprise for visitors to the park for several years. Racers compete for cash prizes and enjoy cheering on their friends and fellow racers. The bicycles are modified from a traditional road bicycle with larger tires to keep participants in control over uneven terrain at high speeds. Racers are required to dismount their cycle and run for portions of each lap as well. Anyone is welcome to participate, whether new to the sport or racing at the national level. There are appropriate categories based on age and experience. The primary requirement is to wear a helmet and have a bicycle that is legal to race safely. Cyclocross-specific bicycles start at $900 and can cost up to $5,000. The City of Newton and its businesses have seen more than 1,000 participants during races in the past seven years. The races are also a primary fundraiser for the Iowa chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. Through the races and associated raffle for a cyclocross bicycle valued at over $1,200, the CCFA has received over $6,000. With entry fee, racers will be able to enjoy grilled food and beverages from local sponsors including Graziano Italian Grocery Store, Court Avenue Brewery, Jasper Winery and Hy-Vee.
