The City of West Burlington will break ground on a trail connector project in the spring of 2024.

City Administrator Greg Mandsager said the project, which will begin at the east side of Southeastern Community College and wind through West Burlington to Huston Street, is being reviewed by the project engineer to find some areas where savings can be realized.

Mandsager said the project was estimated to cost $1.1 million but the low bid for it was $1.4 million. “We are keeping our fingers crossed that some of those costs will come down,” Mandsager said.

Funding for the project includes a mix of grants and local option sales tax proceeds.

The City received $548,111 from the Iowa Department of Transportation's TAP (Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program) Projects eligible for this funding include a variety of smaller-scale transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, safe routes to school projects, and community improvements such as historic preservation, vegetation management, and some environmental mitigation related to storm water and habitat connectivity.
