Join us for another Firetrucker Adventure Biking Talk with BIKEIOWA.com!
Our speakers this month are Jeff Wamser, Dave Rodda, and Donnie Robinson!
They are the only 3 Des Moines area triathletes that have competed in Ultra Triathlons over the past year and they would love the opportunity to share how ultra triathlons are vastly different from Ironman-branded races.
Jeff, Dave and Donnie Robinson represented Iowa this past March at the 2019 Double Anvil Ultra Triathlon in Clermont, Florida. The Double Anvil format is a triathlon double the distance of a iron-distance (Ironman) 140.6 tri, consisting of a 4.8 mile swim, a 224 mile bike course, and 52 mile run. All 3 men finished within the 36 hour allotted time. It was Rodda's 3rd ultra triathlon finish, Wamser's second, and Robinson's first. Their individual races and accomplishments are as follows:
DONNIE ROBINSON, Ankeny
Being the son of triathletes, Donnie started riding at age 9 and running road races at age 11. He has competed in several adventure races, 3 full Ironmans (140.6 miles), 2 time finisher Max-O-Mania, and recently the I-35 Challenge. His 2020 plans include: Pettit 143 Lap Challenge, Florida Double Ultra Team, Pistol 100 Mile Ultra, Des Moines IM 70.3, Steeltwitch Double Ultra, Virginia Double Ultra, Decaman Deca 1x10 Ultra.
DAVE RODDA, Pella
Started running at age 46 in 2013 when he signed up for his first Dam to Dam 20k. After completing Dam to Dam he decided to give triathlon a try at Copper Creek two weeks later, followed by the Hyvee Triathlon and the Des Moines Marathon in the same year before signing up for 2014 Ironman Wisconsin. His race history includes:
2018 RAW (Ride Across Wisconsin), 2018 Horrible Hilly Hundred, 24 Hours of Cummings 200k, 3 Marathons, 12 Half Marathons, 7 half Ironmans, 14 full Ironmans, 2019 Ironman World Championships, and 3 Double Anvils.
JEFF WAMSER, Pleasant Hill
After quitting smoking in 2010, Jeff discovered triathlon and competed in his first sprint at Copper Creek in 2012. Ever since, he has been seeking new challenges at increasing distances, competing in over 60 endurance events with numerous podium finishes in his age group. He has competed in several ultra triathlons, most recently finishing 3 iron-distance triathlons (140.6 mile "Ironmans") in 3 consecutive days in Leon, Mexico, coming in 2nd place and surpassing the previous world record in the process.
