A massive $400 million hydroelectric plant is nearly ready to produce clean, renewable energy for Pella and other communities across Iowa and the Midwest.

The Red Rock Hydroelectric Project [built and operated by Missouri River Energy Services] will tap into water from the Des Moines River to produce enough energy to turn on lights, air conditioning and other electricity needs for18,000 homes. It's located at the base of theRed Rock Dam, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineersflood-control structure that has been in place since 1969.

In addition to the plant,Missouri River Energy Services constructed picnic shelters, a playground, fish cleaning station, restrooms and water fountains near the project site.

It also expanded the Volksweg Bike Trail and added walking trails along the banks of the Des Moines River.
