The Lincoln Walk has been extended .4 of a mile east to the entrance of Ogden High School and the roadways in Glenwood Cemetery have also been hardsurfaced. Asphalting was completed last week; sidefill work is now underway. The extended 8' Lincoln Walk is located on the north edge of Glenwood Cemetery, immediately south of Division Street. Already, the additions are drawing positive response. Mayor Mark Trueblood said today the project became a reality sooner than expected because the City of Ogden had approximately $12,000 remaining in the state grant that funded the first lap of the Lincoln Walk, which meanders southwesterly from the Leonard Good Community Center to the Lincoln Prairie Park on the west edge of Ogden. In addition, Trueblood said, the Glenwood Cemetery Board provided $13,000 while St. John's Catholic Church gave $2,000 on behalf of their cemetery. Without that added financial assistance, the work could not have been accomplished, the mayor indicated. The project also took some letter writing to the Iowa Department of Transportation to obtain variances in regard to the actual location of the Lincoln Walk in relation to Division Street and west to the prairie park. Cooperation of the Boone County board of supervisors was also sought and received. "All told," Trueblood revealed, "the city provided $16,000 to $17,000 to complete the Glenwood Cemetery portion of the project and another $18,000 to $19,000 to complete the trail extension." The accompanying photos show walkers and a bicyclist on the walk Saturday morning and another citizen strolling with the family dog on one of the roadways in Glenwood Cemetery. Another photo can be found on page two today. Lincoln Prairie Park LINCOLN PRAIRIE PARK is a 2.5 acre site located at the southwest corner of the city of Ogden. The park is bordered on the south by Highway 30, on the east by E51, on the north by 219th Street and on the west by private property. The entrance to the park is located on the north side from 219th Street. A walking path starting at the entrance leads to a historic bridge spanning East Beaver Creek, which bisects the park. There is wetland and native vegetation and wildlife. The park will serve as an interpretive site in the Lincoln Highway Corridor Management Plan. THE LINCOLN WALK AND BIKE TRAIL extends from the park northeast to the Leonard Good Community Center. The trail was funded by state and local monies, in addition to in-kind services and contributions from interested citizens. The work was completed in late summer of 2003. The walk now extends east to Ogden High School. Source: http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=12149880&BRD=1842&PAG=461&dept_id=335645&rfi=6
