Des Moines April 6th 2009 Tonight, the DM City Council voted 7-0 vote to approve funding for a bike master plan. After speaking to the benefits of bike-friendly accommodations and predicting a May agenda item for bike lanes on Urbandale Avenue, Councilman Valassis moved approval of the expenditure. Thanks to all of you who sent e-mails to council members. Council person indicated the emails received from cyclists was significant and noted in the conversation by Chris Coleman and others. Things are moving fast! Alta Design planners from Portland have already booked tickets to appear in Des Moines for the April 18 Mayor's Annual Bike Ride. At this early date, it appears there will be some sort of public meeting during Bike to Work Week (May 9-15). By comparison, a public meeting last year on a Cedar Falls bike master plan drew 250 participants. We will do better. Yes, YOU made a difference.
