A lot of people in the RAGBRAI community know Big Jonny. The man himself, Big Jonny, was struck by an automobile on his way back from the Saturday group ride and is currently in the hospital with multiple lumbar fractures (fortunately, no paralysis) and severe road rash. Big Jon was legally in the bike lane at approximately 12:15pm and was hit squarely from behind on an uphill section of the road by a sedan traveling approximately 55mph. The driver left the scene but has now been apprehended and charged with felony hit and run due to the diligence and efforts of multiple other drivers on the road who witnessed the collision. Jon is currently in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
Cyclist recovering from hit-and-run By LARRY HENDRICKS Sun Staff Reporter Tuesday, August 8, 2006 10:00 AM CDT Police say a drunk driver hit and seriously injured a Flagstaff man who was riding his bicycle on Lake Mary Road Saturday afternoon. According to information from the Flagstaff Police Department, the incident happened just after noon inside the city limits. Police responded to the scene of the crash to find the bicyclist being treated by medics. The cyclist was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center to be treated for "serious spinal injuries and numerous abrasions." The cyclist, still at FMC as of Monday afternoon, is listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. Witnesses at the scene told officers that the cyclist was hit by a light blue Ford sedan. Officers found a vehicle matching the sedan's description a short distance away in the Bow and Arrow neighborhood off Lake Mary Road. The vehicle had damage to the windshield, hood and fender, suggesting it was the vehicle involved in the crash. The owner of the vehicle, during conversations with investigators, admitted to hitting the cyclist and leaving the scene. His blood-alcohol level at the time of testing was 0.120 and 0.116 percent, which is above the state's legal driving limit of 0.08 percent. The vehicle owner's driver's license had been suspended at the time of the incident. Frederick Maynard, 43, Flagstaff, was booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated DUI and felony hit and run. As of Monday, Maynard was no longer in jail, according to jail staff. The case remains under investigation. Larry Hendricks can be reached at lhendricks@azdailysun.com or 556-2262
