BIKEIOWA NOTE: we missed this news item in July

Monday afternoon, the Spencer Police Department responded to a bike vs. vehicle accident on South Grand Avenue in Spencer.

The Spencer Police Department says when they arrived on the scene, they provided care to the man on the bicycle until an ambulance arrived. Police then redirected traffic at the intersection of 5th street and South Grand Avenue.

Police spoke with the driver of the vehicle, 35-year-old Jesse Dammann of Spencer, who says he was traveling southbound on the innermost lane of South Grand Avenue he told police as he approached the intersection, he observed a tipped over motorcycle on the east side of the road when Damann looked back down the road, 53-year-old Kelly Swanncut of Spencer was in front of his vehicle on a bicycle. Damann says he did not see the crosswalk sign flashing.

Police later spoke with a witness who stated that Swancutt approached the crosswalk, causing him to slow down. Swancutt then reached for the button to activate the crosswalk sign. The witness said Swancutt then entered the crosswalk, waving to him and that he was struck by Damann’s vehicle as he cleared the witness vehicle in the crosswalk. The witness then exited the vehicle to help Swancutt.

Swancutt was taken to Spencer Hospital by ambulance to be treated for a head wound and other possible injuries. There are no charges or citations being issued for Damann at this time.
