Authorities have released the name of a bicyclist killed earlier this
week in a collision with a car. The Iowa State Patrol identifies the
victim as Iryna Shevchuk of Arnolds Park.
Troopers say Shevchuk
and another person were riding bicycles southbound on Highway 71 near
34th Street in Spirit Lake around midnight Tuesday. Authorities say
Shevchuck was riding her bike in the traveled portion of the roadway,
while the other bicyclist was traveling on the shoulder. Troopers say a
southbound car driven by 23-year-old Dustin Abbas of Milford collided
with the rear of the bike Shevchuk was riding.
Troopers say the
driver of the car couldn't see the bicyclists as they were wearing dark
clothing and had no lights or reflectors on their bikes.
Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.
