A man who struck a Des Moines bicyclist while driving after smoking
marijuana avoided a prison sentence on Thursday, instead being sentenced
to two years of probation.
Austin William Clark, 19, hit Christopher Koranda with a pickup truck in May
as Koranda was riding north on Southwest 63rd Street. The accident,
which happened around 9 p.m., sent Koranda to the hospital in serious
condition.
Clark did not have any alcohol in his system,
but admitted to police that he’d smoked marijuana earlier that night.
Police also found marijuana inside the truck. In a report, police wrote
that Clark was unsteady during field sobriety tests and acted distant.
Police charged Clark with serious injury by vehicle, OWI and possession of marijuana.
