This is a Rail to Trail conversion and offers many sites including woodlands, river valleys, marshes and open prairies.
The name of the trail is derived from the three rivers it crosses along its route (the Boone River and both the West and East Forks of the Des Moines River).

History of the Trail
The trail follows a former stagecoach route between Bradgate and Rutland. All of its 36 railway bridges remain intact and are part of the trail. (Per INHF)
The trail occupies an old Chicago and North Western Railway right-of-way preserved through railbanking in the early 1990s.
