About BIKEIOWA.com
|
BIKEIOWA.com began as a hobby site for Scott Sumpter in March of 2001 in Des Moines. Scott would often find out about rides after they happened, so the site's first main focus was to house a list of upcoming bike rides. Scott would post the rides he knew about, and then told his friends about the site, they told theirs, and soon ride coordinators were emailing their ride information to be posted on the site. Over time additional features were added to educate cyclists on bicycling, trails, news, features, links and advocacy topics in Iowa. Along with these enhancements came more opportunities for visitor participation such as the forums, the box, and the packing list where dynamic interaction could take place. Eventually with monitoring, visitors could post their own events, news, and links.
BIKEIOWA.com has become a community for 'all things cycling' in Iowa. It boasts a wide variety of topics for all genres of cyclists. The "one community" concept not only provides cyclist's information on their own cycling genre, but other genres as well thus providing a broader range of cycling knowledge in Iowa as a whole. BIKEIOWA.com is still based out of the Des Moines area. BIKEIOWA.com is the co-host for Bike To Work Week, a state-wide push to get more people to bike to work!
More information can be found in the About section and the FAQ.
The site’s main method of communication to its members is the biweekly newsletter call the "Ride Reminder". As of January 2008, the "Ride Reminder" goes out to 2,194 active unique opt-in e-mail addresses and consists of the following sections: Header, Iowa Cycling News, Upcoming Events, Latest Features, Poll, and a BIKEIOWA.com sponsor list
