A competitive cyclist died following a Monday morning bicycle crash on U.S. Highway 218.
Medics with La Porte City Ambulance took bicyclist Connie Inks, 54, of Waterloo, to Covenant Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, according to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office.
The vehicle involved in the accident was driven by Joshua Summerhays, 39, of Waterloo.
A Sumner native, Inks was a longtime cyclist, rower and tri-athlete and had earned about 90 medals in the sports as of 2005, winning the Iowa Games and other competitions, according to Courier archives. She was one of the top female rowers in the country in the 2000s.
The crash happened at about 6:05 a.m. Monday on Highway 218 just north of Washburn as both the bike rider and the vehicle were headed southbound, said Sheriff Tony Thompson.
Emergency crews with with La Porte City and Gilbertville responded to the accident, and CPR was performed at the scene.
No charges have been filed at this time. The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol.
