Camp Hertko Hollow’s Mission

To provide an educational and recreational camping program in a residential camp setting for Iowa’s youth between theages of 6-18 who have diabetes. To promote diabetes management skills to gain independence and apositive attitude for controlling the disease.

The camp has two one-week summer sessions. The last week in June is TeenWeek ages 13-18,the first week in July is Kids Week ages6-12. Camp Hertko Hollow’s summer camp sessions are held at the Des Moines YMCA Camp site along the Des Moines River, north of Boone,Iowa. We also offer each April our annual Family Diabetes Education Weekend.

Camp Hertko Hollow was founded in1968 with 37 campers. Now more than 370 campers attend each summer. Over 14,000 diabetic youth have attended our camp in 45 years of service. In addition over 120 healthcare staff volunteer their time during the summer camp sessions to provide diabetes education, regulation and safety for the campers. Campers live in cabins and establish life-long friendships with other campers experiencing the same challenges of living with diabetes.

Camp Hertko Hollow is not affiliated with any other diabetes organization. Visit Camp Hertko Hollow’s website; www.camphertkohollow.com for camper and staff registration, financial support through donor contributions, fundraising activity opportunities, volunteer information and much more. Until there’s a cure for diabetes, there’s Camp Hertko Hollow!
