DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office says it has found a car involved in a fatal hit-and-run bicycle crash near Ankeny. Donald "Brian" Shaver, 45, of Ankeny, was hit while riding his bike at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of Northeast 94th Avenue. The Polk County Sheriff's Office said they have been contacted by a lawyer for the driver of the car, and that he is making arrangements for driver to be turned in. The driver's name has yet to be released. Authorities said Shaver's blue Fuji bike was dragged by the car after he was hit. Officers later found the bicycle Shaver was riding abandoned nearly 16 miles from the crash site. Shaver sustained serious injuries in the accident and was taken to Mercy hospital where he later died. Shaver was the owner of Shaver Relocation Services, a popular business in Ankeny. An estimated 11 percent of all car crashes are hit-and-runs, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration In the U.S., the rate of hit-and-run crashes increased by 15 percent from 1998 to 2002.
