Des Moines' oldest section of paved, multi-use trail is slated for a nearly $1 million resurfacing project that will extend into early fall.

The Des Moines City Council on Monday night approved the work, covering the 3.5-mile trail from the Ashworth Pool parking lot to its link to the KruidenierTrail in Gray's Lake Park and including a bridge across the Raccoon River. Also to be repaved is a slightly less-than-1-mile section of the Walnut Creek Trail from North Valley Drive to the Bill Riley Trailhead in Water Works Park.

Opened in 1972, the Bill Riley Trail was the first of its kind in Des Moines. The work will likely cost about $970,000, according to a memo sent to council members, with bids to be solicited. A hearing is set for May 6, according to the memo.
