A last-minute motion to withdraw a plea derailed sentencing in a fatal 2019 bike crash in Waterloo on Monday.

L.A. Jefferson Jr., 46, had entered Alford pleas – not admitting guilt by opting to plea in order to take advantage of a plea offer – to charges of homicide by vehicle, leaving the scene of an injury accident and operating while intoxicated.

Under the agreement, Jefferson was to be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.

Authorities allege Jefferson struck Dilail Salkic, 22, of Waterloo, while Salkic was riding his bike Aug. 16, 2019.
