Recap/Results

Wow!

That's all I can say for the excellent showing of 155 cyclists that turned out to race at Lake Ahquabi yesterday. Compare that number to the 41 racers that showed up back in 2008 and 61 racers that raced last year in 2009. Even though I was exhausted and coughing my head off, I was really excited to see so many turn out for a race here in Iowa. I think Jed, Rob and I are already thinking ahead to improving things and adjusting for the future to account for the growth.

Growth rate wise, the number of racers is an increase of about 154% over last year!!! A big thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy the fall weather and the event. It's hard to believe it snowed on the same weekend one year ago...

A big thanks to CITA, (especially Brian P. and Ryan H.) for allowing me to use the trailer with the brush hog to cut some new trail.

As to be expected, there were some growth issues in terms of timing and registration with the jump from 61 to 155 racers. Timing had not been difficult in the first two years of this event using a simplistic method of two timers, pad and paper, but the jump to 155 racers was pretty overwhelming using the system we had relied on in the past.

A big thanks to Melinda Reese who volunteered to sit down and help me out with the timing. And thanks to Kent Sovern from the Iowa Parks Foundation who sat down with us to help out as he saw Melinda and I struggling to keep up. We were all in a daze for the 3 - 4 hours trying to stay on top of the timing and lap counts. Consensus from all 3 of us is that chip timing for a field the size of 155 racers is required. Kent has some ideas to make it even better for next year and I hope that we can follow through on his suggestions. If we could find a chip timing race company that would contract out for such an event at a reasonable price - I'm all ears for the future....

I am combing through everything to post the most accurate finishing times for everyone that is possible. Some timing mistakes were pointed out yesterday which have since been corrected, but a few more may exist. In addition, several racers did not write down their plate number on the registration form during registration and or didn't communicate with the girls at registration to get their number written on the registration form. This left us really scrambling to figure out who was who for those particular racers.

I simply did not have the volunteer crew/staff to provide an awards ceremony for the shorter duration events until the 4 and 5 lap races in the CAT 1 and Marathon categories were completed. I apologize for that.

I simply ask for everyone's understanding with regard to the growth pains encountered this year due to the huge turnout. All of the growth issues will seriously be addressed for any future event - no matter who and how things develop for next year.

In the end, I just wanted everyone to have fun and enjoy the day. From most of the smiles I saw and conversations after the race, I think that goal was met for most of the participants.

Thanks again to all those who showed up to race, who helped out and to Jed, Rob and the sponsors.

I apologize for any spelling errors with the names. Let's just say I encountered some interesting penmanship.... '-}

Description

Mountain Biking (RACE)

Distance - 8 miles/24 miles/40 miles

On Sunday, October 10, 2010 the Iowa Mountain Bike Championship Series heads south to repeat the new type of race for the series. The event was postponed in August due to mud and excessive rain and October is the perfect time for a fall classic mountain bike race. Have you heard of the famous Chequamegon 40 in Wisconsin that is run on cross country ski trails, forest roads, snowmobile trails and wooded lanes? That's right!! We now have a "Cheqaumegon like" race in our very own Iowa series. Coming for the third time to Iowa is our very own backwoods, super fast, fat tire XC race held on a course loop that rolls on the multi-use cross country ski, snowmobile, and hiking trail that circles Lake Ahquabi. The 7.5 mile + race loop will also utilize backwood sections of the wooded trails throughout Lake Ahquabi State Park to make for a scenic race filled with unique challenges. Feature Race, the 40 mile Open Marathon, everyone is welcome. Sign up as an individual or up to 5 person relay teams. The course is beginner friendly and all you need are knobby tires with a little bit of fitness. IMBCS points series awarded for Beginner (CAT III), Sport (CAT II) & Expert (CAT i) classes (8, 24 & 40 miles, respectively). The coolest race t-shirt ever (Maybe.) See bikeiowa.com soon to register. Mullet sightings... • A fast, fast race with big payouts for men AND women • Camping, kayaking, etc. available • Plenty of schwag giveaways • A mulletastic good time This course is fast, open & beginner friendly. Bring the brothers/sisters/cousins out for a day of racing. It may not be NASCAR, but it's dirty fun. BONUS mullet tip of the day for triathletes: A mullet is cooler when combined with a speedo.

Route

The 7.5 mile loop includes a trip around Lake Ahquabi's multi-use trail with additional sections that include backwood trails. You will encounter gravel, dirt, roots, ruts, grass, logs, wooden bridges, railroad tie stairs, climbs, fast descents and the best nature has to offer on this scenic course. The loop will be the perfect test of one's fitness with all of the full throttle speed and all of the climbing, but will not be technical in nature to scare off the entry level racer. In fact, this will be a perfect venue for first timers and experts alike.
