RE: the sales tax vote on Tues, March 6th 2018. - Ankeny will cut property taxes if 1-cent sales tax passes

Ankeny plans to extend the High Trestle Trail from Uptown to Oralabor Road where it would connect with the Gay Lea Wilson Trail allowing riders to reach Altoona, Pleasant Hill and downtown Des Moines.

It's estimated to cost around $4 millionand funding will include both public and private dollars. The city will do more planning and design this yearto finalize the center.

It also plans to extend the High Trestle Trail from Uptown to Oralabor Road where it would connect with the Gay Lea Wilson Trail allowing riders to reach Altoona, Pleasant Hill and downtown Des Moines.

The first phase of the extension from Uptown to Magazine Road is planned for 2018-2019. It includes an underpass at Ankeny Boulevard.

The second phase from Magazine Road to Oralabor Road would take place in 2020-2021 and include an overpass at Oralabor.

Each phase is expected to cost about $1.38 million.


The vote

Ankeny will vote independently. If it passes in Ankeny and fails elsewhere, the sales tax will still go up in Ankeny.

A vote of 50 percent plus one vote is required for the measure to pass.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
