Algona soon will have new park benches and trash bins courtesy of the Build with Bags program.

The plastic bag recycling program being led by Iowa grocers announced on Earth Day, April 22, that Algona is one of 13 recipients of a Build with Bags grant award in 2014. It will receive $2,000 to purchase three new park benches and two new trash receptacles to place along the new trail on the east side of Algona.

The benches and trash bins are made from recycled plastic bags by Plastic Recycling of Iowa. Each bench represents approximately 10,600 bags.

Build with Bags, a cooperative effort of the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, Keep Iowa Beautiful, Metro Waste Authority in Des Moines, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, City Carton Recycling and The Des Moines Register, was launched in August 2009.
