If you skipped Cedar Rock during RAGBRAI, here's why you should go back.
Every year RAGBRAI rolls through communities packed with history, architecture, parks, museums, trails, and attractions. The problem?
There's never enough time to see it all.
When riders rolled into Independence for RAGBRAI LIII, many probably heard someone mention a Frank Lloyd Wright home just a few miles outside town.
Some planned to visit.
Many never made it.
We were fortunate enough to stop by the Sunday after RAGBRAI, and after spending a few hours exploring Cedar Rock State Park, one thought kept coming back:
We should have told more people to go.
This isn't just another historic home.
It's one of Iowa's architectural treasures.
Iowa's Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece
Hidden on a limestone bluff overlooking the Wapsipinicon River, Cedar Rock is one of the finest examples of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian architecture anywhere in the country. Nearly everything - from the home itself to the furniture, lighting, carpeting, draperies, and even decorative accessories - was designed or selected by Wright himself.
Of Wright's buildings, Cedar Rock is considered one of his most complete works.
Even more remarkable...
It contains one of Wright's coveted signature red tiles, signifying projects where he felt he had complete artistic control. Only about 25 buildings worldwide bear this distinction.
Meet Lowell & Agnes Walter
The story begins with Lowell Walter, who grew up in nearby Quasqueton.
After graduating high school, he attended business college in Des Moines, where he met Agnes Nielsen. Lowell eventually became a successful Des Moines businessman before the couple returned to Buchanan County to create their dream retreat along the Wapsipinicon River.
The Walters admired Frank Lloyd Wright's philosophy of simple, efficient living in harmony with nature. After seeing Wright's work and reading about his Usonian homes, they commissioned him to design what would become Cedar Rock.
Construction began in 1948 after wartime building restrictions delayed the project, and the home was completed in 1950. Wright visited the property several times during construction and again after the Walters moved in.
More Than Just a House
The estate is much more than the famous residence.
The property includes:
- Beautiful gardens
- Walking trails
- Visitor Center
- Outdoor hearth
- Entrance gate
- River Pavilion (boat house)
- Spectacular overlooks of the Wapsipinicon River
The River Pavilion is especially unique.
It's believed to be the only original Frank Lloyd Wright-designed boat pavilion still in existence.
A Gift to Iowa
The Walters had no children.
Instead, they wanted their home to inspire generations of Iowans.
When Lowell died in 1981, Agnes fulfilled their wishes by donating Cedar Rock to the State of Iowa. Today it is preserved as Cedar Rock State Park, where visitors from around the world come to experience one of Wright's masterpieces.
Our Take
We were honestly surprised.
Not because we expected Cedar Rock to be disappointing...
But because we had no idea just how impressive the entire experience would be.
The visitor center does an excellent job telling the Walter family's story before you ever step inside the house.
Then comes the trip to the property.
As you wind down the trail and catch your first glimpse of the home nestled into the bluff above the Wapsipinicon River, you immediately understand why this location was chosen.
The architecture doesn't dominate the landscape.
It becomes part of it.
Inside, nearly every detail carries Wright's signature - from built-in furniture and geometric patterns to natural lighting, sightlines, and views that blur the line between indoors and outdoors.
Even if architecture isn't your thing...
It's worth seeing.
Can You Ride There?
Absolutely.
From Independence, Cedar Rock is only a few miles away and can be reached by bicycle using low-traffic county highways or gravel roads.
It makes an excellent destination ride before or after exploring Independence, Quasqueton, or the scenic Wapsipinicon River valley.
Don't Make the Same Mistake
If you were on RAGBRAI and skipped Cedar Rock because you were headed to the beer garden, concert, or campground...
We get it.
There simply aren't enough hours in the day.
But that's exactly why places like Cedar Rock deserve another trip.
Sometimes the best part of RAGBRAI isn't found on the route itself...

• Can You Bike There?
Yes! Cedar Rock is approximately 8 miles northeast of Independence and can be reached by bicycle using a combination of paved county highways and gravel roads. It's a scenic ride through the rolling countryside of Buchanan County and makes for a great day trip.
• Tours
Guided tours of the Walter House are offered seasonally. Tour schedules and availability vary throughout the year, so check the official website before visiting.
• Admission
House tours require an admission fee. The grounds, visitor center, and state park are open to the public. (Be sure to verify current tour fees and hours before your visit.)
• Learn More
•Don't Forget -Bring your camera! Between the architecture, gardens, river overlooks, and surrounding countryside, Cedar Rock is one of the most photogenic destinations in eastern Iowa.
