Major changes are coming to a park in the Oak Park neighborhood of Des Moines.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department is planning improvements at McHenry Park, which overlooks the city off Oak Park Avenue, including walkways, drainage work, native plantings, a custom artistic seating structure and a new playground meant to replace the current aging and damaged equipment.

Construction is planned to begin this fall and finish in spring 2023, according toJen Fletcher, marketing coordinator for the department. Funding will come from the city's capital improvement program under thepark playground improvements item.

Earlier this year, the city council approved $465,000 in spending from multiple sources for playground improvements at parks across the city, including McHenry Park, for the 2023 fiscal year.
