The Des Moines City Council is moving forward with a plan to eliminate some one-way streets in the city.

The council signed off on a proposal to turn Grand Avenue between Third and Fifth avenues, and Fifth Avenue from Grand Avenue to Court Avenue into two-way streets.

The $1.6 million change aims to make those streets safer and improve bus stops, walkability, bike lanes and sidewalks.

Construction starts in the spring of 2022 and should wrap up by the fall.
