Through rainy weather, the City of Ames celebrated the completion of the Welch Avenue construction that replaced more than a century-old infrastructure below and redesigned the streetscape above.
City staff and Ames residents congregated at Ames FireStation No. 2 at 11 a.m. Thursday for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Mayor John Haila thanked business owners for their patience during the construction that caused a complete closure of Welch Avenue for part of the process.

Two bike lanes were added on both sides of the road, andsidewalks werewidened for those frequenting bars, restaurants and coffee shops in the area.
