JACKSON, Wyo. — A Jackson resident was hit by a vehicle and killed last week while bicycling in Iowa.

As reported by KCCI News 8 in Des Moines, Stephen McDonald, 52, was declared dead at the scene last Friday after he was struck by a motorist near Knoxville, Iowa. Iowa State Patrol confirmed the accident happened on Highway 14 North near the intersection with Highway G44 at approximately 8 a.m. on July 31. Both the motorist and McDonald were traveling in the same direction.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol are investigating.

McDonald was a longtime bootfitter stationed slopeside at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. His ability to fit feet to ski boot was practically legendary—many of his clientele marveling at how their feet no longer hurt after skiing all day.

He ran twice for mayor of Jackson, highlighting the need to reform the police department into a “kinder, gentler” agency in a 2014 run. His 2016 campaign focused on preserving Jackson’s small town, western heritage.

McDonald biked nearly everywhere while he lived in Jackson since moving here in the 1990s. At one point, while driving trucks for a local excavation company, he pedaled 12 miles round trip to work every day. He was married with four children.

“I’ll get Jackson off the road to exploitation and back on the trail to preservation,” McDonald once promised on the campaign trail in 2016.
