Mon’te Noel Mesidor’s shift at the UPS packaging centerstarts early: 4 a.m.

The 18-year-old package handler— designated anessential employee during the COVID-19 pandemic — needed a way to get to work in the morning, when buses aren’t yet running and walking would mean waking up even earlier to make the hourlong trip.

But he got some help. He’s one of the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers clients who received a bicycle from Des Moines’ Street Collective, making the early morning, 2 ½-mile trip to the UPS plant much easier.

“I’m always early,” Mesidor said.
