An 83-year-old Iowa City man riding his bicycle on old U.S. Highway 218 just south of Iowa City died after being struck by a minivan Monday morning.

At about 10:35 a.m., David Lorentz Schuldt was struck by a northbound 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. He was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for treatment before he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the minivan,Shaena Elizabeth Beachy, 26, of Kalona,couldn't move to the left to avoid Schuldt because of traffic in the adjacent lane and hit him, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the incident. The agency was assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Johnson County Ambulance.

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition pointed out some information about the road "This crash occurred on a 4-lane section of road near the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Some of this road does have paved shoulders, but this part did not. It is our understanding this section of road is scheduled for repair by Johnson County which will include paved shoulders."

Another Source says "The State Patrol report says the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time."
