The Polk County Board of Supervisors voted to not allow a developer to build a road crossing the Great Western Trail in West Des Moines after dozens of residents voiced their concerns at a Wednesday night meeting.

The crossing would have been just off Veterans Parkway, just north of Maffitt Lake Road.

Representatives from Bike Iowa said they fear the development would bring commercial traffic to one of the few places in the metro where people go to escape it.

“The Great Western Trail is one of our assets in central Iowa,” said Scott Sumpter, owner of bikeiowa.com. “It’s an asset to our generation, future generations, and every time we allow an at-grade crossing, it limits that asset. It gets split up.”
