A man is dead after his bike was struck by a car on Highway 61 near the Des Moines/Lee County Line.
Lee County Sheriff’s Department Officials tell KBUR that officers first responded to the area near the Skunk River Bridge at around 9:14 pm on Wednesday to a report of a car-bicycle accident. Upon arrival, they found the male bike rider, dead.
An investigation revealed that both the vehicle and the bicyclist were northbound on Highway 61 when the car struck the bike from behind, throwing the rider from the bike. The rider was riding in the right lane of the highway, not wearing reflectors and had dark clothing on when he was struck.
The name of the victim was released Friday as 66-year-old Wendell Leroy Reiman of Burlington.
The Iowa State Patrol was called to assist with the accident scene.
