Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh went for a ride Thursday night to celebrate National Bike to Work Week.

The 2016 Mayors’ Ride took place at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge landing in Omaha. Walsh was joined by Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert and Bellevue, Nebraska Mayor Rita Sanders.

Walsh said biking is great for people of all ages.

“It’s an intergenerational activity,” Walsh said. “It’s great for the joints for elderly riders and a great way to get toned for people younger than me. And throw on some training wheels, and the whole family can go bike riding.”

Along with celebrating National Bike to Work Week, the ride also brought attention to National Bike to Work Day, which was Friday, May 20.

“Let’s not just make it one day a year,” Walsh said. “Whenever you can, wherever you can, get on that bike and get some exercise.”

While the three area mayors spoke before the ride, they did not travel together. Riders could pick from following Mayor Stothert to Omaha City Hall, Mayor Sanders south to Bellevue and Mayor Walsh east to Council Bluffs.
